“The GST on coal has been increased from 5% to 18%. However, the impact of the same is partly offset by removal of GST compensation cess of Rs. 400/MT. For the thermal power sector using relatively low calorific value coal (less than 4000 Kcal/kg), where prices are typically lower than Rs. 3000/MT, the overall impact will be lower tax incidence and a marginal reduction in costs and hence cost of generation. However, for industrial users using a higher calorific value coal and higher priced coal, there is likely to be a net increase in tax incidence and costs.”
